Role Overview
The Research Fellow (Health Economist) will work in partnership with economists, epidemiologists, mathematical modelers, and social scientists to evaluate public health interventions targeting infectious diseases. The primary focus will be on neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Africa and the Pacific, involving cost‑effectiveness and budget impact assessments alongside trials and programmatic implementation of mass drug administration regimens, including moxidectin for onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis. The successful applicant will also evaluate financing mechanisms for sustainable investment in NTDs, in a research programme supported largely by a new Synergy grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council.
The role reports to the head of the Health Economics and Health Systems Research Group and has no direct reports.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. health economics, public health, economics) with substantial experience in design or evaluation of public health interventions.
* Experience undertaking economic evaluations and budget impact assessments of public health interventions.
* Demonstrated experience in leading or co‑leading economic evaluations alongside trials of health interventions, using STATA and/or R.
* Demonstrated experience modeling long‑term health outcomes and costs of public health interventions.
* Knowledge of overseeing and ensuring the quality, integrity, and security of project datasets.
* Experience assisting in training and managing field teams across multiple study sites in Australia and overseas.
* Ability to communicate findings through project reports, conference presentations, and peer‑reviewed publications, including as lead author.
* Strong research output evidenced by peer‑reviewed publications, scientific presentations, and securing research funding.
Desired Experience
* Evaluation of interventions targeting neglected tropical diseases.
* Experience working in low‑ and middle‑income countries and/or resource‑constrained settings.
* Mentoring project staff and supervising higher‑degree students.
