Job Description:
Smilegate Europe is looking for a Lead Technical Artist to join their growing team of developers. The ideal candidate will serve as the bridge between artists and engineers, ensuring an efficient art pipeline and optimized game development.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Leading and inspiring a team of talented coworkers and being the go-to contact for all matters related to the design and delivery of tech art systems and assets.
* Working closely with the Art Director, artists, and engineers to realize the technical and aesthetic vision for the game.
* Exploring innovative ways to populate and annotate game levels, enabling artists and designers to have a broader positive impact on the game's look and design without sacrificing creative control.
* Developing new or modifying existing world-building methods to speed up iteration times for the Design and Art teams.
* Creating custom workflows using scripts and coded tools solutions for the art team.
* Troubleshooting key pipeline issues and solving core problems in cooperation with the development team.
* Developing long-term pipeline strategies for the teams and studio.
The skills and experience you'll bring to the role include:
* 10+ years of professional experience in console or PC game development demonstrating high visual standards.
* Experience with two or more AAA shipped titles in a technical role.
* Technical expertise across multiple art disciplines including procedural environment generation, shaders, PBR materials, animation, and rigging.
* Proficiency in at least one development language such as Python, MEL, C#, or C++.
* Ability to effectively manage direct reports and assist with their daily tasks.
* Strong understanding of performance considerations for open world development on consoles and PCs.
* Excellent communication skills to balance the needs of game design, art, and programming.
* Experience with a wide range of tech art projects involving art tools, graphics engines, and hardware.
* High proficiency with 2D and 3D art tools like Maya, ZBrush, Houdini, Substance Designer/Painter, World Machine, among others.
Bonus points if you have:
* Experience with scripting languages such as MAXScript, MEL, or Python.
* Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
* Ability to present a clear vision of how work addresses problems and requirements.
