Context And Mission
The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES) led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes develops, among other research tools, global climate models to perform a range of climate experiments at frontier (storm and eddy-resolving) spatial resolutions. The Department is looking for a research engineer or scientist to assist in the development of the high-resolution global simulations with the IFS/NEMO climate model. Applicants with a more scientific background are also encouraged.
The candidate will first participate in the development of a Climate Digital Twin for Climate Adaptation based on the IFS-NEMO-SI3 global model as part of the BSC contribution to the Destination Earth European initiative to deliver cutting-edge climate simulations of unprecedented accuracy. The candidate will later contribute to the European Project EERIE, where a global eddy-resolving version of IFS-NEMO-SI3 will be used to investigate whether and how ocean mesoscale interactions (never resolved before at coupled global scales) provide a new understanding of future climate change .
Key Duties
* Modify and test several model features to ensure that the IFS-NEMO-SI3 model is suitable to produce physically sound climate simulations
* Collaborate with members of the Earth Sciences Department to test the latest model and workflow developments, debug potential model errors, and ensure that the experiments are performed efficiently
* Conduct and evaluate numerical simulations for model tuning and spin-up
* Contribute to the production of the final Destination Earth and EERIE experiments and their assessment from a physical point of view
Requirements
* Education
o Bachelor degree in computer sciences, applied mathematics or physics, or any related discipline
o A PhD and work experience in meteorology/oceanography will be considered an asset
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Advanced knowledge in high-level computer languages (especially FORTRAN) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (bash, Python …) and debugging tools.
o Experience working with numerical models of ocean, atmosphere and other Earth system components.
o Experience in using HPC architectures and parallel programming will be valued.
o Experience with version control systems SVN or Git) will be valued.
* Competences
o Reliable and constructive interpersonal skills
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills
o Ability to take initiatives, prioritise and work under set deadlines
o Ability to work both independently and within a team
o Fluency in English
