Offer Description
The project focuses on synthesizing networks of nanowires using a novel process developed by the group, involving rapid growth at ultra-fast rates from an aerosol of catalyst nanoparticles in a gas phase. This CVD method allows for large-scale production of nanowire networks, enabling various applications in energy storage and other fields. The PhD aims to understand nanowire growth processes—such as alloy formation, crystal nucleation, and layer growth—for different chemistries including Si, SiC, and metal oxides. The student will also work on controlling nanowire structure, producing heterostructures, and exploring new nanowire chemistries.
The student will assist in designing and building advanced CVD synthesis and monitoring equipment, perform synthesis experiments, and conduct multi-scale characterization using techniques like electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The position is within a collaborative team funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant, with potential for a secondment in an external collaborating laboratory.
