This is an opportunity to work with an Ashoka Fellow
Ashoka Fellows are leading social entrepreneurs that have been taken through a rigorous selection process, testing the quality of their ideas and character, to become part of the Ashoka Fellowship and Network. Ashoka Fellows take on the challenges of building innovative system change ideas to make and spread social impact in a world wrought with challenges. They refuse to let the ‘impossible’ stand in their way to creating a better world.
This is an unpaid, volunteer opportunity About The Affiliated Organization
Project Soar was founded in 2013 by Ashoka Fellow Maryam Montague to address a critical gap in programming for marginalized adolescent girls who were being left behind by many women’s rights and education initiatives. The organization was created to ensure that girls—not just women—receive support early enough to avoid early marriage and leave school with confidence, skills, and vision for their future. Project Soar helps underserved and marginalized teen girls, particularly those at risk of school dropout, child marriage, early motherhood, and exclusion from leadership and decision‑making. Its programs are designed for girls facing socioeconomic and cultural barriers that limit access to education, reproductive health knowledge, and opportunities for personal development. We deliver a holistic empowerment program centered around an award‑winning, rights‑based curriculum based on five core principles: Value, Voice, Body, Rights, and Path. Through interactive workshops and mentorship delivered by trained local facilitators, girls build self‑confidence, leadership skills, reproductive health knowledge (including menstrual health), and academic perseverance. The curriculum is structured into a portable and scalable program called Soar in a Bag, which empowers girls to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and pursue future opportunities. Project Soar’s work is crucial because adolescent girls in marginalized contexts face disproportionate challenges—such as gender‑based violence, limited access to education, and economic exclusion—that threaten their futures. By equipping girls with skills, knowledge, and supportive networks at a formative stage, Project Soar fosters lasting personal growth and community transformation, helping girls become leaders who can influence broader social norms and contribute to more equitable societies.
