Role Overview
Nature Communications seeks an Associate or Senior Editor with a background in environmental, sustainability, or disaster science, with a keen interest in the social sciences. The successful candidate will assist in building the journal’s success by reviewing multidisciplinary open-/access manuscripts and ensuring high editorial standards.
Location and Working Model
Milan or Madrid – Hybrid working model. Application deadline: 25 May 2026.
Role Responsibilities
* Handle original research papers and oversee the peer-review process
* Collaborate with editorial colleagues on manuscript selection and all aspects of the editorial workflow
* Make well-reasoned editorial decisions based on expert advice
* Determine subject representation within the journal
* Liaise extensively with Nature Portfolio editors and the broader scientific community
* Attend conferences and visit research institutions
Essential Qualifications
* PhD (or equivalent) in environmental or social sciences or a closely related discipline
* Strong understanding of environmental, sustainability, or disaster-related research
* Ability to critically assess the novelty, context, and impact of research
* Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
* Strong interest in interdisciplinary science
* Ability to quickly engage with new research areas
* Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
Desirable Qualifications
* Postdoctoral or equivalent research experience
* Editorial experience (training provided)
