Overview
Amazon Prime is looking for an ambitious Economist to help create econometric insights for world‑wide Prime. Prime is Amazon's premier membership program, with over 200M members worldwide. This role is at the center of many major company decisions that impact Amazon's customers across a variety of industries reflected in Prime benefits such as fast‑free e‑commerce shipping, digital content (exclusively streaming video, music, gaming, photos), reading, healthcare, and grocery offerings. Prime Science creates insights that power these decisions.
As an economist in this role, you will create statistical tools that embed causal interpretations using massive data and state‑of‑the‑art scientific computing. You will apply econometrics (causal, counterfactual/structural, experimentation) and machine learning, delivering work that may be publishable in internal or external scientific journals and conferences. You will work closely with economists, applied scientists, data professionals (business analysts, business intelligence engineers), product managers, and software/data engineers to produce internal, Amazon‑facing automated scientific data products that inform company decisions. You will write strategic documents explaining how senior leaders should use these insights to create sustainable value for customers, often briefing senior‑most leaders at Amazon.
Responsibilities
• Build, estimate, and defend statistical models (causal, counterfactual, machine learning) using software such as R, Python, or STATA.
• Apply a broad set of statistical and computational techniques beyond a single specialized area of econometrics.
• Develop scalable production software and build world‑class software‑building skills, possibly leveraging SQL, machine learning frameworks, and large‑scale scientific computing on distributed infrastructures such as Spark‑Scala or PySpark.
• Deliver projects on time, often collaborating with other team members and co‑authors.
• Demonstrate strong writing and emotional intelligence skills for collaborative teamwork across functional roles.
• Manage a high level of ambiguity while maintaining a growth mindset.
Basic Qualifications
- PhD in economics or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of industry, consulting, government, or academic research experience
- Knowledge of at least one statistical software package such as R, Stata, Matlab, or SAS
- Experience in prediction and forecasting within a research or industrial environment
- Experience handling large datasets

Salary & Benefits
The base salary range for this position is $136,000.00 – $184,000.00 USD annually. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
