The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES), led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, develops and uses weather, air quality, and climate models to improve simulation capabilities at regional and global scales.
The Department is seeking a postdoctoral researcher or research engineer to develop a machine-learning-based, high-resolution, short-term regional weather forecast system for Southern Europe. The work involves using ECMWF's Anemoi framework and collaborating with a team of physical and computer scientists.
The successful candidate will compare the new forecasts with operational simulations from various institutions, utilizing standard verification tools and analyzing physical consistency. Collaborations with other Department members working on global climate emulators and air-quality forecasting models are also expected, offering opportunities to work with European meteorological services.
Key Duties
1. Lead the development of data-based regional weather forecasting for Southern Europe.
2. Perform short-term weather forecasts to assess system quality.
3. Evaluate forecast properties in terms of accuracy and physical consistency.
4. Prepare and submit supercomputing access proposals for simulations and LLM tuning.
5. Collaborate with the community developing similar forecast systems.
