Overview
The Director, Epidemiology (Rare Oncology) is a senior strategic and scientific leadership role that provides global direction and epidemiology expertise for programs within Alexion’s rare oncology therapeutic area. The role requires minimal supervision and partners with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure appropriate epidemiological perspectives support strategic needs and are integrated into corporate plans. The position is accountable for developing and implementing cutting-edge, effective and impactful epidemiology deliverables, ensuring all work is performed efficiently, within budget, and aligned with current epidemiology/pharmacoepidemiology methodology advances.
The Director develops a strategic plan for assigned indications that aligns with corporate needs and navigates policies to ensure successful execution. The role is accountable for all epidemiology deliverables and study results executed within assigned indications, either personally or through oversight of other epidemiologists, vendors, or contractors.
Responsibilities
- Accountable for developing strategic and tactical plans for epidemiology deliverables across assigned indications within Alexion’s rare oncology portfolio to support company objectives.
- Accountable for executing deliverables (e.G., systematic literature reviews, database studies, analyses within primary observational studies/disease registries, PASS/PMCs) in accordance with the plan, either personally or through oversight of other Epidemiologists/vendors/contractors.
- Provide epidemiology support to Clinical Development, Patient Safety, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, and Commercial activities across the product life cycle. Actively participate on cross-functional therapeutic area teams and lead sub-team meetings as appropriate.
- Ensure epidemiology perspective is integrated into company materials (e.G., study protocols, case report forms, regulatory documents) within assigned indications and areas.
- Interact with authors and in-house reviewers on scientific manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and posters based on observational study data.
- Evaluate potential data sources and their applicability for real-world evidence generation in support of Alexion’s oncology drug development.
- Represent the EpiRWS department in interactions with external stakeholders, including Scientific Advisory Boards and regulatory authorities.
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives, and represent the department in other cross-functional teams throughout the development lifecycle;
oversee other epidemiologists who participate on such teams.
- Provide expert technical guidance and mentoring within the Epidemiology and Real World Science department. Collaborate with GPTLs, stakeholders, and the EpiRWS Leadership Team on annual therapeutic area strategic plans.
- Support the General Head in developing and maintaining department Standard Operating Procedures and Process Guides, and annual department objectives (including project planning, resource forecasting, and assignments for assigned indications).
- Travel may be required (up to 10%).
Required Qualifications
- PhD / DSc / DrPH in Epidemiology with at least 6 years of industry experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech/consulting sector, or MPH/MSc in Epidemiology with at least 10 years of industry experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech/consulting sector.
- Proven ability to think strategically and leverage epidemiologic expertise across a broad range of diseases;
strong planning and execution skills;
excellent writtenand oral communication.
- Seasoned technical expertise across the department’s deliverables (systematic literature reviews, secondary data analyses, observational studies including patient/disease registries and PASS/PMCs);
strong knowledge of epidemiologic methods and biostatistics;
ability to quantify safety signals, disease epidemiology, and cause-effect relationships.
- Experience coordinating work with department personnel or contractors in Epidemiology and Real World Science;
mentoring and professional development responsibility.
- Experience publishing and presenting epidemiology projects at external industry conferences/workshops;
ability to maintain relationships with external clinical advisors and epidemiological experts.

- Proven epidemiological experience in the Oncology therapeutic area.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

ability to thrivein a fast-moving environment with changes in scope or direction.
- Up-to-date technical knowledge of epidemiology and relevant biostatistics methods;
experience with SAS or other statistical software.
- Productivity in epidemiological research demonstrated by design, execution, and publication, including collaboration with external investigators.
- Record of high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals.
