Research Focus
Extended Reality (XR) technologies and communication networks (e.g., 5G) are providing to the users novel ways to explore and interact with the represented environments, its elements, and remote people.
Within this framework, our research activities focus on the development and evaluation of immersive communication systems, which can provide real-time social XR applications for entertainment, education, healthcare, etc. In this sense, the researcher may work on one or various of the following aspects:
* Develop technological frameworks to advance in immersive communications, addressing the gap that is preventing their use as a common and social communication mean (techniques for compression, synthesis, etc. of XR).
* Analyze the novel factors that influence the user experience and the interaction of the users with XR technologies, using appropriate subjective evaluation methodologies (including questionnaires and psychophysiological signals) and developing models to estimate different aspects of the user experience.
Research team/group
The Grupo de Tratamiento de Imágenes (GTI) is a research group working on theory, methods, and applications of digital image and video processing. Besides specific developments on video related topics, GTI also considers research on complete systems like visual communications, real time computer vision, and multimedia telecom applications. Currently, GTI activity focuses on immersive video communications and extended reality (XR) applications, including deep-learning for visual computing and user experience assessment. GTI infrastructure includes an immersive laboratory (ImLab) for XR devices, psuchophysilogical sensors, etc., and a real-time free-viewpoint video laboratory (FVV Live) endowed lightweight schemes for volumetric video acquisition, transmission, and rendering.
