We operate at the forefront of imaging, onboard processing, and applied research for critical domains including environmental monitoring, energy, defense, and agriculture.
We are seeking a talented AI Engineer to join our Engineering team in Leioa (Bizkaia, Spain). You will work on cutting-edge technology in satellite image processing and onboard intelligence through research, development, and deployment of AI/ML algorithms.
If you’re passionate about space, AI, and Earth observation, this is your launchpad!
What’s in it for you?
- Mission-driven innovation: Apply AI to space technology that tackles climate, energy, and global challenges.
- Versátil working hours: Work-life balance starts with trust in how you manage your time.
- Youthful, proactive, and dynamic environment: Join a collaborative team where autonomy and innovation are part of our daily mindset.
- Private health insurance: Your wellbeing comes first—with top-tier medical coverage.
- Office perks: Enjoy fresh fruit, quality coffee, and an energizing work atmosphere.
- Discounts at campus facilities: Get access to local restaurants and sports installations on the UPV/EHU campus.
- International exposure: Collaborate with ESA, NASA, and research institutions worldwide.
Your mission
As an AI Engineer, you will design, build, and optimize machine learning models and data pipelines that empower satellite operations and image processing. You’ll work alongside experts working in multi-disciplinary fields including satellites, space operations, image processing, data pipeline and geospatial analytics to co-develop AI solutions that extract actionable insights from SATLANTIS’s high-resolution imagery.
This is a full-stack applied AI role: from ground-based pipelines for advanced image processing to lightweight onboard models optimized for in-orbit inference.
You’ll play a central role in scaling SATLANTIS’s AI capabilities across missions, shaping the future of next-generation missions from space.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Building AI pipelines for the ground segment—training and deploying deep learning models for super resolution, atmospheric correction, methane detection, crop and forestry classification, and more.
- Designing scalable workflows, automating data ingest, tiling, and inference on both on-prem and cloud environments (Docker/K8s).
- Validating performance, benchmarking PSNR/SSIM against simulated and in-orbit data, and creating continuous test dashboards.
- Porting lightweight models for in-orbit demonstrations, optimizing to ONNX/TensorRT when missions require it.
- Collaborating with Image Processing, Flight Software, and Systems Engineering teams for end-to-end product delivery.
- Sharing knowledge through code reviews, workshops, and SATLANTIS School sessions for interns.
What will set you up for success?
- You hold a BSc/MSc in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Physics, or similar fields—providing a solid foundation for AI in space.
- You have up to three years of experience designing and deploying ML models in production or scientific workflows.
- You are proficient in DL frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, ONNX, TensorRT).
- You feel comfortable working with CI/CD tools.
- You have a strong understanding of model evaluation, generalization, and uncertainty estimation.
- You are familiar with geospatial libraries: Rasterio, Xarray, GDAL, etc.
- You have an English level of at least B2, allowing you to contribute to international projects with ESA and NASA.
You’ll stand out even more if you bring:
- Skills in C & C++ programming and GNU/Linux OS.
- Experience with imaging algorithms and spatiotemporal models.
- Knowledge of satellite EO data formats (GeoTIFF, NetCDF).
- Hands-on expertise with CUDA/C++ for servers and embedded GPUs.
- Knowledge of radiometry, photogrammetry, or OGC APIs & STAC metadata.
- Contribution to open-source ML or EO projects
