Marine Underwriter

The Spanish Marine & Aviation Underwriting Team within AXA XL provides insurance solutions for a diverse portfolio of large and corporate clients globally. Our offerings include Marine Cargo Policies, Project Cargo Policies, Freight Forwarders Liability Policies, Shipper’s Interest Insurance Policies, General Aviation Policies, and Products / Airports Liability for aviation policies.
We have a great opportunity for an experienced underwriter to join our successful team and support the expansion of our practice.
As an Underwriter, you will play a critical role within the team, focusing on assessing, quoting, and underwriting potential risks, processing deal documentation, managing workflow, establishing relationships internally and externally, and acting as the interface between brokers / clients and AXA XL. Your goal will be to generate profitable premiums and develop broker and client relationships to enhance our underwriting capabilities.
This role is regulated under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity regime.
What you’ll be doing
Essential responsibilities include :
* Underwrite, manage, and service a renewal book while producing new business.
* Analyze and evaluate risks.
* Negotiate with producers to achieve profit objectives.
* Maintain expertise in our products, services, and targeted markets.
* Support business planning and forecasting; monitor financial exposure and premium income.
* Stay informed on claims advised, supporting claims settlement when needed.
* Identify and pursue new product development opportunities.
* Ensure all underwriting activities are documented accurately in our systems, meeting data quality standards and company metrics.
You will report to the Marine & Aviation Manager, Iberia.
What you will bring
We are looking for someone with :
1. A university degree with knowledge of the maritime industry, such as a Master’s degree.
2. Understanding of insurance fundamentals and proven experience in marine / cargo underwriting; aviation underwriting experience is highly valued.
3. Proficiency in English and Spanish; additional languages are a plus.
4. Strong communication and negotiation skills, with good market knowledge.
5. Analytical skills and mathematical abilities.
6. Excellent problem-solving skills, data-driven decision-making, and a strong work ethic.
7. Motivation to join a highly skilled team and contribute actively.
8. Flexibility and innovation in response to changing environments.
9. Ability to develop and maintain relationships with customers, producers, brokers, and across AXA XL and AXA Group entities.
