About The Business Division
Our Water Utility Division and Water Consultancy Division have ambitious growth plans aligned with AMP8 (2025–2030) and the broader water sector, focusing on Strategic Resource Options to address future water supply challenges. We cover all phases of the project lifecycle—from feasibility studies through detailed design, construction support, and commissioning to handover—and provide specialist technical support to colleagues across our global business.
Overview Of The Role
We are seeking a Senior or Principal Hydraulic Engineer with a strong technical background and expertise in hydraulic analysis and design to join our team in Spain. The role requires fluency in English and involves leading design and analysis for projects such as transmission pipelines, surge analysis, hydraulic design of water and wastewater treatment works, and stormwater storage tunnels. You will work with other teams (mechanical, process, structural, environmental) to deliver multi-disciplinary projects and may represent Mott MacDonald inside Client organisations as required.
Key Responsibilities And Duties Include
* Supporting and/or leading the delivery of a programme of projects
* Delivering Hydraulic Engineering services on a range of projects
* Producing and reviewing engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and reports
* Proactive management of design risk to deliver constructable design solutions
* Identifying and supporting continuous improvement of procedures and processes to drive efficiency and innovation, contributing to digital engineering initiatives
* Mentoring junior colleagues and providing technical guidance on best practice in hydraulic design
* Engaging with clients and stakeholders to ensure efficient delivery, providing progress updates and communicating issues that could impact programme, quality or cost
* Collaborating across disciplines to ensure efficient project delivery within your portfolio
* Maintaining professional development and applying best practices
Candidate specification
Essential
* Significant technical experience of pressurised and open-channel hydraulics in civil engineering, including surge analysis and design for water and wastewater treatment, transmission pipelines, and large-scale drainage systems
* Experience in developing hydraulic calculations and hydraulic profiles for water and wastewater treatment works
* Proven ability to lead delivery of technical projects, manage budgets, and prepare time and budget estimates for proposals
* Experience working on multi-disciplinary water pipeline and networks projects with environmental, geotechnical, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers
* Strong collaboration and communication skills for technical discussions in both oral and written forms
* Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., ICE or CIWEM)
Desirable
* Experience in transmission pipeline design, including route and material selection, hydraulic design, pipe wall thickness calculations, and thrust restraint solutions
* Experience in CFD applied to the water industry
* Experience in supervision of physical scale modelling studies
