Overview
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is Europe's leading center for supercomputing research. The successful candidate will work in a highly sophisticated HPC environment, have access to state-of-the-art systems and computational infrastructures, and establish collaborations with experts and companies in different areas at the local and international levels.
The AI Factory is a large-scale initiative led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), designed to position Europe at the forefront of global AI development and deployment. With a multi-stakeholder approach, the AI Factory aims to lower the barriers to AI innovation by offering access to state-of-the-art AI computing infrastructure, advanced training programs, and a dynamic innovation ecosystem. The initiative supports start-ups, SMEs, corporates, academia, and public institutions, providing tailored support to boost AI capabilities and promote responsible and impactful AI adoption.
The Natural Language Processing for Biomedical Information Analysis (NLP4BIA) group at BSC is an internationally renowned research group working on the development of clinical and biomedical LMs, NLP, language technology, and text mining solutions applied primarily to biomedical and clinical data. It is a highly interdisciplinary team, funded through competitive European and National projects requiring the implementation of natural language processing and advanced AI solutions making use of diverse technologies, including Transformers and recent advances in Large Language Models (LLM) to improve healthcare data analysis.
The NLP4BIA group at BSC is looking for a Data Scientist and language technology expert for Health applications with interest in technical aspects of Natural Language Processing, AI, and Language Models including support and advice of collaborators including startups, companies, and clinical researchers, ensuring that AI innovations translate into healthcare impact.

This project is funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility, in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) 2020 / 2094 of 14 December 2020, and regulated by Regulation (EU) 2021 / 241 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 February 2021, in the context of the "BSC AI Factory" project.
The BSC AI Factory project has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101234399. The JU receives support from the European Union's Horizon Europe Programme and Spain, Portugal, and Türkiye.
Key Duties
Develop AI-based NLP solutions and clinical LLMs for health applications, with emphasis on:
Deep learning architectures (transformers, generative AI, agentic AI)
Unstructured data and content (EHRs, literature, patents, clinical trials, social media, etc.)
NLP for biomedical and clinical data
Support AI Factory users (startups, SMEs, corporates, academia, public institutions) in building early-stage AI healthcare applications.
Provide data science consulting and strategic input to projects in medicine, pharma, materials sciences (biomaterials), chemistry, toxicology and biotechnology.
Attend and contribute to entrepreneurship and innovation training (business planning, investor pitching, startup development, data science strategy).
Publish research results and present at international conferences.
Participate in outreach and dissemination within the AI Factory's innovation ecosystem.
Qualifications
Education
Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or related fields.
PhD is welcome (plus), but not required.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
Expertise in machine learning / deep learning applied to biomedical or healthcare data.
Strong programming skills (Python, R, etc.).
Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
Strong interest in entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems (training will be provided).
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Hands-on experience with transformers, generative AI, agentic AI, medical imaging, NLP, or multimodal AI.
Familiarity with HPC environments or large-scale data infrastructures.
Competences
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to interact with clinical, academic, and industrial partners.
Fluency in English and Spanish (Catalan is a plus).

Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
