ABOUT THE ROLE

The Data Center Field Engineer – Controls and Building Management Systems (BMS) is a leadership role focused on controls, automation, and operational supervision of data center infrastructure. This position involves overseeing the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of controls and building management systems within the data center environment. Typically, controls and BMS comprise controlling and automation equipment such as programmable logic controllers (PLC), automation cards, sensors, operational data analysis, and supervision. The Field Engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams, provides technical expertise, and ensures the reliability and efficiency of controls, building management, and electrical power management components supporting data center operations.

The Data Center Field Engineer – Controls / BMS acts as the link between Data Center Operations and Data Center Construction and Engineering within Data4. They are directly accountable for the delivery of safe, secure, and available operations of all data centers under their control. They liaise with Data Center Global Process Owners to suggest process improvements based on field observations, such as maintenance criticality, incident severity, and follow-up plans.

The role involves fostering a collaborative and knowledge-driven environment, supporting Facility Managers (FMs) and Critical Environment Managers (CEMs) on technical issues and critical operations. Additionally, they develop technical synergies across countries where Data4 operates data centers, increase operational teams’ involvement through training initiatives, and contribute to technical discussions with customers. They also handle technical requests and discussions, addressing engineering and design deep dives as needed, and liaise with Data4 Data Center Construction, Design Engineering, and vendors during audits (e.g., Single Points of Failure, Launch Readiness).

The engineer conducts technical audits on data center controls, monitoring, and actuation systems’ resilience, and assesses Facility Managers’ and Critical Environment Managers’ ability to manage these systems efficiently. They contribute to increasing technical knowledge through structured training, knowledge-sharing sessions, and hands-on experience. They organize training initiatives, drills, and knowledge checks to empower operational teams, ensuring high standards of reliability and safety in data center operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In terms of IMS certifications:

Respect and enforce policies related to:

- IMS: Improve and enforce the certification policy with stakeholders.

- H&S: Follow health and safety rules.

- Environment: Uphold environmental policies.

- Information security: Adhere to information security policies.

- Energy: Follow energy management policies.

Job-specific responsibilities include:

- Conduct on-site controls & BMS audits, update documentation (SLD, drawings, studies, functional analysis, CMMS, EOP, SOP).

- Build technical knowledge, skills, and documentation.

- Review and harmonize control systems operations, support energy efficiency initiatives.

- Participate in technical assessments from construction to commissioning and handover.

- Validate technical documentation at handover.

- Support FMs and CEMs on technical issues.

- Develop technical synergies across countries.

- Increase operational team involvement through training and knowledge sharing.

- Develop and implement technical daily reporting.

- Participate in technical discussions with customers and respond to technical requests.

Requirements

Education and experience:

* 10+ years in similar or mission-critical operations roles, with incident management background.
* 5+ years in Data Center Construction, Design & Engineering.
* Bachelor’s Degree in Automation and Control Systems Engineering or equivalent.
* Proficiency in PLCs, with relevant certifications.
* Certifications in BMS platforms like Honeywell, Schneider Electric, Siemens, etc.
* Certifications such as Uptime Institute ATD or CDCP.

Technical skills:

Required:

* Deep knowledge of control and BMS systems, chillers, electrical power management, generators, and related components.
* Experience in data center design, engineering, and project commissioning.
* Ability to review technical documents, adhere to codes and standards, and troubleshoot complex issues.

Preferred:

* People management experience.
* Ability to engage in technical discussions with customers.
* Skills in liaising with teams and vendors for technical details.
* Experience in training and increasing operational team involvement.
* Strong communication, collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
* Adaptability, project management, and training development skills.
