The Carlos III National Cancer Research Center Foundation is seeking applications for the position of Scientific Director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO).
The CNIO was established in 1998 to develop excellence in cancer research. Its current building, inaugurated in 2002 on the Chamartín campus of the Carlos III Institute of Health, spans over 12,000 square meters and hosts more than 400 researchers across 33 research groups working in basic, applied, and clinical research. The CNIO is recognized globally for its scientific output, ranking among the top 10 institutes worldwide in research productivity based on high-impact publications. It has a significant international presence, with over a third of staff being foreign and English serving as the working language.
CNIO Governance and Control
CNIO operates as a Public Sector Foundation governed by a Board of Trustees, with a Delegate Commission managing scientific, research, teaching, and personnel policies. It maintains independent management mechanisms allowing flexibility in hiring, procurement, and strategic planning. The Scientific Direction reports to the Board of Trustees and collaborates with the Management. An International Scientific Advisory Board evaluates scientific activities and provides strategic recommendations.
Responsibilities and Duties of the Scientific Director
The Scientific Director will:
* Establish and lead the CNIO's scientific policy.
* Propose new researchers and research groups for inclusion or discontinuation.
* Recommend members for the Scientific Advisory Board.
* Present proposals on scientific policies to the Delegated Commission, following Scientific Advisory Board input.
* Develop and oversee the implementation of strategic plans.
* Report scientific progress to the Board of Trustees.
* Prepare annual activity reports.
* Perform additional duties as assigned by the Board or its President.
* Represent the CNIO institutionally.
The Director will work closely with the Managing Director, ensuring scientific development aligns with strategic objectives, and will coordinate all scientific programs, maximize research outcomes, and secure necessary funding.
Selection Procedure
Applications are due within 40 days of publication. The process aims to conclude within six months. A Selection Committee, chaired by the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Universities and comprising other distinguished members, will evaluate candidates and recommend the most suitable to the Board of Trustees for appointment.
Minimum Requirements
* PhD in biosanitary or related disciplines.
* Over ten years of leadership experience in research centers.
* Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and motivational skills, with the ability to attract top international talent.
* Strategic vision to align scientific activities with institutional goals.
* Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary cancer research activities.
* High analytical capacity for project development and implementation.
* Excellent communication skills with stakeholders, including the scientific community, public administrations, and health systems.
* Fluent in spoken and written English.

* Willingness to dedicate full working hours to the role.
