MISSION OF THE ROLE
Our GenAI platform uses Kong API Gateway as the central integration point for all
services, including AI agents, 3rd party APIs, and internal microservices.
As an APIM Engineer, you will own the design, deployment, and operation of Kong,
ensuring high availability, security, and optimal performance for enterprise
Responsibilities
* Deploy Kong API Gateway on GKE with high availability configuration
* Design and implement API routing strategies for multi-tenant use cases
* Configure Kong plugins for authentication (API keys, OAuth), rate limiting, and request transformation.
* Build abstraction layer for 3rd party APIs (Salesforce / CRM Systems,
* Implement request/response transformation and protocol translation
* Configure circuit breakers, retry policies, and failover strategies
* Establish API versioning and deprecation policies
* Create monitoring dashboards for API traffic, latency, and error rates
* Document API standards and onboarding guides for use case teams
* Support LLM provider integration with caching and cost optimisation
Requirements
* 4+ years experience with API gateway technologies
* Strong expertise in Kong (open-source or Enterprise) - essential
* Experience deploying Kong on Kubernetes
* Proficiency in Kong plugin configuration and custom plugin development (Lua)
* Strong knowledge of API security patterns (OAuth 2.0, API keys, JWT
* Experience with rate limiting, throttling, and quota management
* Understanding of REST API design principles and OpenAPI specifications
* Familiarity with service mesh concepts and ingress controllers
* Experience with LLM API integration (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Vertex AI)
* Knowledge of declarative configuration and GitOps workflows
* Background in CRM and enterprise application integration
* Experience with Kong Enterprise features (Dev Portal, Analytics)
* Familiarity with gRPC and GraphQL proxying
