General Accountant I – PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, headquartered in Andalusia, AL, is a generation and transmission electric cooperative serving the wholesale power needs of 20 distribution members (16 electric cooperatives and four municipal electric systems) in Alabama and northwest Florida. Job Summary & Qualifications
The purpose of this job is to become familiar with and assist in the performance of all general accounting, treasury, finance, tax, and financial reporting functions of PowerSouth's Finance and Accounting Department. This position requires a Bachelor\'s degree in Accounting or closely related field and an understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The incumbent should be able to prepare month-end closings and adjusting journal entries and reconciliations, interpret accounting data and reports, identify discrepancies, determine proper accounting treatment, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to accept responsibility, complete tasks, and meet deadlines is essential.
Job Responsibilities
Prepare month-end closing and adjusting journal entries, account reconciliations, and account analysis that aid in producing accurate financial records used by upper management for business strategy and rate-making decisions; assist in researching new GAAP and RUS accounting pronouncements; oversee clerical personnel to ensure accurate records and deadlines are met.
Prepare financial reports and statistical data for the monthly Board Report, monthly RUS Report, CWIP Report, and analyses for management to evaluate financial results and plan strategies and rates.
Manage payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees; assist in the preparation of IRS Form 940/941 and W-2 forms with timely payments and filings.
Ensure accounts payable invoices and employee expenses are properly authorized, coded, and paid; assist with compliance and filing of annual IRS Form 1099s; supervise clerical personnel to ensure policy compliance.
Ensure construction work orders, property records, warehouse inventory issuances, and depreciation of plant assets are accounted for per RUS guidelines; assist in preparing RUS loan applications and supporting work order information; record debt service payments and new issuances; prepare reports for long-term financing and construction decisions.
Prepare monthly member utility bills and related invoices; coordinate with metering and information systems for meter changes and load shifts; account for RATchets in CP/NCP bills including fuel and demand rate adjustments; prepare miscellaneous AR billings and maintain AR subsidiary ledgers with monthly GL reconciliations; assist management with cash flow and revenue planning reports.
Assist in accounting for monthly fuel and purchased power costs, accruals, and related fuel inventories; account for statistical data on power purchases (KWh, capacity); account for monthly solar DG purchases and generate invoices per contractual rates; prepare reports on vigente vs. budgeted costs, under/over collected fuel costs, and ratemaking decisions.
