HSE Manager – Spain (Health, Safety, Environment & Security)

Location: Navalmoral de la Mata, Cáceres (Extremadura), Spain

Company Overview: AESC is a global leader in lithium-ion and LFP battery technology, expanding in Spain with a €1-billion gigafactory in Extremadura, set to open by 2026, creating up to 900 jobs. It aims to be the first net-zero industrial park gigafactory in Spain, aligning with its mission for sustainable manufacturing.

Role Purpose: The HSE Manager will establish and lead a world-class HSE function supporting existing operations and the new gigafactory. Responsibilities include ensuring legal compliance, promoting a safety culture, risk mitigation, and environmental stewardship in a high-growth environment.

Key Responsibilities:

1. HSE Strategy & Compliance: Develop and maintain EHSS programs aligned with Spanish/EU legislation, ISO standards, and local safety codes. Monitor laws, update policies, and lead permit applications to ensure full compliance. Collaborate with the global HSE team to implement internal policies in Spain.
2. Risk Management & Incident Response: Support design from an environmental, health, and safety perspective. Conduct safety risk assessments, environmental audits, safety tours, and evaluations. Lead incident investigations and ensure regulatory reporting. Maintain emergency plans and conduct drills.
3. Training & Cultural Development: Develop multilingual (ES/EN) HSE training programs covering safety topics. Promote a proactive safety culture through talks, committees, and engagement metrics.
4. Environmental & Sustainability Leadership: Establish programs for waste management, energy efficiency, water usage, and GHG tracking aligned with net-zero goals. Ensure compliance with EU and Spanish environmental regulations.
5. Security & Regulatory Interface: Coordinate with authorities for safety licensing and inspections. Oversee physical security aspects related to battery manufacturing facilities.
6. Team Leadership & Reporting: Report KPIs monthly to the Global Head of EHS and ensure data systems are integrated with company software.

Required Experience & Expertise:

* 10+ years of HSE experience in industrial or manufacturing environments.
* At least 5 years in leadership or country-level roles within complex organizations.
* Proven management of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems with successful audits.
* Strong risk assessment, incident investigation, and emergency preparedness skills.
* Deep knowledge of Spanish and EU regulations such as Seveso III, REACH/CLP, Battery Regulation, and permitting processes.
* Hands-on leadership during capital projects and gigafactory launches, especially in battery or clean-tech sectors.
* Familiarity with process safety, ATEX, machine safety, and contractor compliance.
* Experience in delivering multilingual safety training and monitoring HSE KPIs.
* Excellent stakeholder engagement skills across functions and external agencies.
* Background in sustainability and waste compliance, understanding circular economy challenges in battery manufacturing.
