The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and promotes equity, diversity and inclusion in its hiring and research activities.

Context and Mission: The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is seeking a Senior Research Engineer to join the AI Factory initiative. The AI Factory is a European project accelerating AI adoption across industry sectors, particularly supporting SMEs and startups while strengthening the European innovation ecosystem. This role leads the Data Services support function to ensure AI Factory users can access and use the data platform, tools, and services available to them. It combines hands-on expert support with coordination responsibilities, managing a team of Data Support Case Experts and coordinating with domain experts to resolve complex user requests. The role serves as a bridge between technical data services teams, project management, and end users, ensuring consistent service delivery and up-to-date knowledge of services and best practices.


Key duties

* USER SUPPORT AND EXPERT GUIDANCE
* Provide expert-level guidance to BSC AI Factory customers on how to access, use, and troubleshoot the data services (data platforms, repositories, tools, catalogs, Trusted Research Environments)
* Diagnose customer issues and coordinate with domain experts to provide solutions, escalating to specialists when needed
* Gather feedback from customers and support staff to identify gaps, usability issues, and service improvement opportunities
* TEAM COORDINATION
* Coordinate the daily activities of Data Support Case Experts and domain experts across teams
* Ensure consistent data service delivery by defining workflows, procedures, and response standards
* Monitor support tasks and track resolution times and quality
* KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND DOCUMENTATION
* Digest recommendations from domain experts and translate them into practical guides and support materials for customer companies
* Maintain and refine knowledge bases, Standard Operating Procedures, and support documentation
* Facilitate structured knowledge sharing through documentation, training, periodic briefings, and internal wikis
* SERVICE QUALITY AND PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
* Track service Key Performance Indicators and propose process improvements
* Coordinate with technical teams to communicate recurring issues, feature requests, or service bottlenecks
* Contribute to continuous improvement of user support, training, and communication strategies


Requirements

* Education
o ○ MSc in Data Science, Data Management, Project Management, or a related field ○ Equivalent experience will be considered
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o ○ 3+ years providing data services or user support in IT ○ Experience coordinating small teams or cross-functional support activities ○ Understanding of data service environments (institutional data repositories, collaboration platforms, secure research environments) ○ Ability to troubleshoot issues related to data access, permissions, and workflows ○ Good fluency in both spoken and written English
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
o ○ Hands-on experience with Python, R, or similar programming languages ○ Experience in a research or academic environment ○ Knowledge of FAIR data principles, research data management practices, or Open Science services ○ Familiarity with ticketing systems, knowledge bases, and service-level processes ○ Experience with cloud platforms, data-transfer tools, or metadata systems
* Competences
o ○ Excellent communication and customer-service abilities ○ Strong coordination, organizational, and interpersonal skills ○ Ability to translate technical and legal concepts into user-friendly language ○ Team-oriented approach and ability to work across technical and non-technical groups ○ Ability to work both independently and within a team ○ Self-motivated, proactive and with social skills


Conditions

* The position will be located at BSC within the Directors Department
* We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
* Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
* Holidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
* Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
* Starting date: 2026


Applications procedure and process

Development of the recruitment process

* The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system (Concurso-Oposición). The recruitment process consists of two phases:
* Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points
* Interview phase: The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.

The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women. In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process. The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
