About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and hosts the EuroHPC JU joint undertaking. BSC’s mission is to research, develop and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress. The center combines HPC service provision and R&D across computer, computational, life, earth and engineering sciences, employing over 1,000 staff from 60 countries.
Context And Mission
The position is hosted by the Climate Variability and Change (CVC) Group within BSC’s Earth Science Department. The group undertakes fundamental research to: 1) understand climate variability and change, including climate extremes; 2) investigate global biogeochemical dynamics and the effectiveness of carbon removal technologies; 3) develop new Earth System modeling capabilities at unprecedented resolutions; 4) improve forecasting of climate variations and biogeochemical dynamics from one month to multiple decades, globally and regionally.
The role is funded by the European projects RESCUE and OptimESM, which investigate the Earth System’s response to net‑zero emissions and develop next‑generation Earth system models. The candidate will work with scientists in the CVC group and the Computational Earth Science group, offering opportunities to collaborate internationally and participate in two large European projects.
Key Duties
* Lead the development of new ocean‑based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) representations in EC‑Earth ESM.
* Analyse multi‑model climate projections forced by scenarios with CDR to assess effectiveness and potential impacts on oceanic ecosystems.
* Run experiments with Auto‑EC‑Earth for RESCUE, OptimESM and CMIP7 + CDRMIP.
* Coordinate WP5 in RESCUE‑WP5, producing joint publications.
* Write and publish research papers documenting results.
* Participate in project meetings, model development communities (EC‑Earth, NEMO) and pursue new funding lines.
* Contribute to the mCDR‑MRV proposal and discussions for the next phase of CDRMIP.

o PhD in oceanography, atmospheric or climate science, or a related discipline.
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Experience in ocean biogeochemistry/physics and/or climate modelling.
o Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer‑reviewed scientific journals.
o Capacity to process and analyse large Earth Science datasets.
o Programming and scripting skills (bash, Python, Fortran) and familiarity with data analysis/visualisation tools (CDO, NCO, R, Python).
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Interest and capacity to help write and lead research and computing proposals.
o Knowledge of version control systems (git, svn).
o Previous post‑doctoral experience valued.
* Competences
