Within Azure Data, the big data analytics team offers products that enable data engineers and scientists to extract insights from all data types—structured, semi-structured, and unstructured. We are hiring a SR Applied Scientist for the Gray Systems Lab (GSL), part of the Azure Data CTO office. GSL addresses challenges in open-source and proprietary technologies related to analytics, cloud, AI, and storage systems. We develop reliable, scalable, and high-performance distributed systems for data analytics on Azure, publish in top conferences, and contribute to open-source projects. Our team has impacted millions of dollars in Microsoft revenue and costs through innovative technologies involving analytics on GPUs, container tech, graph databases, infrastructure for LLMs, and more. Qualifications
* Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND extensive related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Master's Degree in the same fields AND related experience OR Doctorate in the same fields AND related experience.
* Extensive experience with programming languages such as C#, Java, Python, C++, or Rust.
* Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or key contributor.
Responsibilities
* Establish collaborative relationships with relevant product and business groups, providing expertise to create business impact. Initiate activities like technology transfers, standards participation, patent filings, white papers, tool development, or consulting. May publish research for intellectual property generation.
* Translate research into production by applying long-term research to solve immediate product needs, bridging the gap between research and development teams, and ensuring cutting-edge technology is practically applied to meet business goals.
* Work independently to create product impact by developing research-backed solutions to significant business problems, potentially publishing research to generate intellectual property.
* Become an expert in a complex or ambiguous domain, sharing knowledge of industry trends and technological advances to guide product development and strategic decisions.
