Through our leading brands, trusted for more than 180 years, we provide technology‑enabled products, platforms and services that help researchers to uncover new ideas and share their discoveries.
About the Brand
Nature Portfolio’s high‑quality journals and services across the life, physical, chemical and applied sciences help move science and society forward. Nature Portfolio is home to the leading open‑access multidisciplinary journal Nature Communications and other open‑access titles such as Scientific Reports.
The Role
Nature Communications is a leading multidisciplinary open‑access journal publishing high‑quality scientific research. We seek a researcher with a background in mechanical engineering who has a critical eye, a deep understanding of the subject, and the ability to think on their feet. The Associate/Senior Editor role is idóneo for researchers who love science and engineering, seek a career that extends beyond the bench, and enjoy reading papers outside their chosen area of research.
Responsibilities
- Handle original research papers and work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
- Make well reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice.
- Determine the representation of the subject area in the journal.
- Liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and with experts in the international scientific community.
- Attend conferences and visit research institutions.
Qualifications
- A PhD (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or a closely related field, with expertise in areas such as dynamics, kinematics, acoustics/vibrations, fluid‑structure interaction, control, or other mechanics‑driven domains. Experience with applied computational methods and machine‑learning‐based modelling or simulation is preferred.
- Postdoctoral research experience is preferred but not essential; a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the subject is essential.
- A passion for science and a thirst to learn more, demonstrating breadth of interest in scientific research within and beyond your speciality and across the wider fields of mechanical engineering.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
- The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of the discipline.
- Be eager to travel and meet scientists worldwide, to learn more about their research and to help them understand what we look for in papers we seek to publish.
This role can be located in one of our offices in Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, Pune, New Delhi, Milan or Madrid. The position is full‑time, permanent. Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for Senior Editor positions.
Application
Applicants must include a CV, a cover letter explaining their interest in the post and their preferred office of employment, and a separate concise (300–400 words) discussion of recent scientific developments in any area related to mechanical engineering that you find particularly timely and exciting, stating why.
Applicants will be considered as they apply.
