Secondary Academic Support Teacher Role Profile
The Academic Support Teacher is an integral member of the Secondary teaching team, playing a key role in keeping learning seamless and school operations running smoothly. Appointed by the school and working under the guidance of the cover manager and academic leadership, the postholder collaborates closely to deliver and support educational programmes, ensuring students experience consistent, high-quality teaching across the Secondary phase.
Each morning, the postholder receives a full timetable tailored to the school’s needs, covering lesson delivery, supervision, and wider school support responsibilities.

- Deliver lessons during teacher absences using pre-prepared materials and departmental guidance.
- Maintain classroom expectations, routines, and behaviour standards.
- Ensure continuity of learning within established schemes of work
- Provide feedback to departments or absent teachers as required.
- Supervise structured study periods when assigned.
- Marking classwork

Purpose of Role

Core Functions
Internal Cover
- Deliver lessons during teacher absences using pre-prepared materials and departmental guidance.
- Maintain classroom expectations, routines, and behaviour standards.
- Ensure continuity of learning within established schemes of work
- Provide feedback to departments or absent teachers as required.
- Supervise structured study periods when assigned.
- Marking classwork
Extended Cover
- Where a short-term absence extends and a long-term cover appointment has not yet been secured, the Learning Continuity Teacher may assume temporary responsibility for a class. In these circumstances there may need additional responsibilities such as:
- Grading or report writing
- Host parent meetings
- Tutor group ownership
Programme Collaboration
- The postholder collaborates with lead Teachers in programme delivery.
- Reinforces curricular objectives under guidance.
- Supports classroom delivery when deployed alongside a lead Teacher.
- Assists in preparation or organisation of teaching materials where required.
Pastoral Responsibilities
- Temporary tutor responsibilities may be assigned.
- Participation in safeguarding systems is expected.
- Monitoring student wellbeing and behaviour forms part of the role.
- Support of assemblies and pastoral initiatives is required.
- Attendance at parent meetings may occur in a supporting capacity.
Other Duties
- When not allocated to lesson cover, the timetable may include but will not be limited to:
- Break and lunchtime supervision, corridor and transition duties
- Supervised study periods and detentions where appropriate
- Library and study support
- Examination invigilation
- Support for school events, trips, parents meetings or other operational activities
Skills, Qualifications And Experience Required
- QTS (Qualified teacher Status) or PGCE
- Degree or equivalent in relevant subjects
- Good up-to-date subject knowledge and practical skills
- Successful secondary teaching experience
- Ability to motivate children of differing abilities
- Knowledge of the National Curriculum and exam specifications
- Knowledge of effective teaching and learning strategies
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritize effectively
- Enthusiasm and a passion for learning
- A commitment to getting the best outcomes for all staff, pupils and parents and promoting the ethos and values of the school
- An approachable manner and excellent interpersonal skills
