With bases globally and in the Greater Glasgow region of Scotland, GRW Talent’s clients is an independent manufacturer of III-V photonic devices who provide custom foundry services in InP, GaAs, GaN and GaSb on 2”, 3” and 4” wafers, and have ongoing, active research and development programmes in various technology areas in partnership with private and public bodies. They are at the very sharp end of laser chip development for next generation AI data centres.
The business is experiencing strong commercial and production ramp growth across all sites – Scotland, Sweden, USA and India. Working closely with a number of Tier 1 partners and customers, they are now looking to recruit a Buried Heterostructure Laser Development Engineer.
Reporting into board level, the BH Laser Development Engineer will manage development and process qualification of a BH DFB Laser Platform from which the company will manufacture 100mW lasers for Data‑centre applications; support transition of new device designs and processes from R&D to mass‑production; and develop a roadmap to 500mW DFB laser designs. Key responsibilities should include:

* Overall Technical Project Management developing a High Power BH DFB Laser Platform at Glasgow Fab and external wafer foundry.
* Manage simulation and design of BH DFB laser epi and device designs including advanced grating designs to support high performance DFB lasers (eg narrower LW, higher powers, reduced back‑reflection sensitivity, high test yield)
* Work with a cross functional team of MOCVD and Process Engineers to optimise BH etch and regrowth technology to deliver industry‑leading parametric and reliability performance
* Analysis of Test Data to feedback into models to improve simulation accuracy
* Develop models of how laser design and processes affect device reliability.
* Publish internal technical literature and reports in relation to device performance.
* Ensure engineering documentation and procedures comply with ISO 9001 and most demanding customer requirements.
We are looking for an experienced Product, Process, Technology Platform Engineer with proven experience in Buried Heterostructure laser development. A good base level of InP and MOCVD growth process and device engineering should be taken as a given.
This represents an incredible opportunity to be front and centre of this exciting new technology platform development project. You will be regarded as the internal subject matter expert for all things BH and will work across all functions and levels. Externally, you will represent the company at some of the world’s largest Tier 1 data centre product manufacturers. A superb base salary and package is negotiable DOE.
Candidates can be based remotely across Europe but will need to expect and accept substantial travel to Scotland, possibly USA (West Coast) and South East Asia – China and Taiwan. There is an option to relocate closer to the Scottish operations if preferable.
