The ICIQ Severo Ochoa Predoctoral Fellowships support exceptional graduate students worldwide to complete a PhD in Chemistry in partnership with the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). The fellowship provides comprehensive training, a multidisciplinary research project, and opportunities for short-term placements in distinguished international research institutions.
Responsibilities
Conduct research aligned with one of the ICIQ–Severo Ochoa Strategic Plan lines: Innovative Catalysis, Renewable Energy Vectors, or Molecular Medicine.
Work under dual mentorship with an ICIQ Group Leader (supervisor) and co-supervisor.
Participate in the annual SHARP (Severo Ochoa PhD Training Program) for two weeks.
Engage in training in state‐of‐the‐art scientific instrumentation, IP management, entrepreneurship, research integrity, knowledge transfer, grant applications, project management, communication skills, and career development.
Prepare interim and final reports for the Agencia Estatal de Investigación.
Maintain full social security coverage and comply with Spanish public health and pension benefits.
Eligibility Criteria
Master's or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, or related disciplines completed before PhD enrolment.
Open to students of any nationality.
Individuals who already hold a PhD or have previously benefited from a predoctoral fellowship under the Plan Estatal de Investigación are not eligible.
Evaluation Criteria
Academic and/or scientific‐technical career path (max 50 pts)
Scientific‐technical contributions (up to 45 pts)
Mobility and internationalisation (up to 5 pts)
Suitability for the proposed research activities (max 50 pts) – assessed on prior training, experience, and the added value of the project for the candidate and host institution.

Fellowship Conditions
Employment contract regulated by Spanish Law of Science, Technology and Education (June 1).
Annual salary: first year €20, 000;
second, third, and fourth years €25, 000.
Funding for enrolment fees, short stays abroad, and dual mentorship.
Contract renewable annually for up to four years, subject to satisfactory performance.
Full social security coverage, public health, pension, and unemployment benefits.
Optional postdoctoral training period (POP) if the PhD thesis is defended before fellowship expiry, with a total duration (doctoral + postdoctoral) not exceeding 48 months.
Right to temporarily interrupt the fellowship for maternity/paternity or reduced working hours, without counting against total duration.
