Battery Systems Lead
Location: Spain (on-site / hybrid)
✛ This role is being managed exclusively by HYTE on a retained basis ✛
Direct applications and confidential enquiries are welcomed.
✛ Overview ✛
HYTE is retained by a fast-growing, venture-backed advanced engineering company to appoint a Battery Systems Lead into a critical technical leadership role.
This position sits at the intersection of battery systems development, high-voltage engineering, prototyping, testing, industrialisation and certification. The role is highly hands-on and focused on taking advanced lithium-ion battery systems from concept through design, validation, production readiness and operational deployment.
The successful individual will combine strong battery systems expertise with practical engineering judgement, remaining close to the hardware whilst providing technical leadership to engineers, suppliers and development partners.
This is not a large-scale automotive production management role, nor is it a purely requirements, systems or programme management position.
The role is ideally suited to someone who has personally designed, developed, integrated and tested high-voltage battery systems and wants to play a leading role in bringing complex engineering programmes into reality.
✛ Key Responsibilities ✛
* Lead the development and integration of advanced high-voltage lithium-ion battery systems
* Define battery pack requirements from system level through to module and component level, considering safety, performance, integration and certification requirements
* Drive battery architecture, module development, cooling concepts, enclosure design, electrical integration and manufacturing readiness activities
* Develop battery safety strategies including thermal runaway mitigation, containment and fault management approaches
* Lead safety-critical engineering activities including FMEA, FTA and functional safety assessments
* Work closely with electrical, mechanical, software and systems engineering teams to ensure robust and executable product development
* Support battery pack development activities in collaboration with internal engineers, suppliers and external development partners
* Contribute to battery testing and validation activities including structural, thermal, environmental and abuse testing
* Lead technical reviews including design reviews, engineering changes, qualification plans and verification activities
* Support supplier selection, technical evaluation, component sourcing, product definition and design-to-cost activities
* Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to engineers, graduates and development partners
* Remain actively involved in prototype assembly, troubleshooting, testing and engineering problem-solving activities
* Support certification strategy development and means of compliance activities for high-voltage battery systems
✛ Candidate Profile ✛
* Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or Aerospace Engineering
* 7+ years of experience developing lithium-ion battery systems, battery packs or high-voltage energy storage solutions
* Experience designing, developing or integrating high-voltage battery packs, ideally 400V+ and 50kWh+
* Hands-on experience across battery pack architecture, modules, cooling systems, enclosures, busbars, interconnects, electronics integration and system validation
* Strong understanding of battery safety, thermal management, thermal runaway behaviour and containment strategies
* Experience with battery testing, validation, industrialisation and production readiness activities
* Knowledge of FMEA, FTA, V-model development, requirements engineering and structured product development methodologies
* Experience with engineering drawings, BOM structures, supplier management, procurement activities and design-to-cost principles
* Experience leading projects, work packages or multidisciplinary engineering teams whilst remaining technically hands-on
* Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced environments where practical engineering decisions and execution are critical
* Experience with MATLAB, Simulink or similar engineering tools would be advantageous
* Experience with BMS development or battery electronics integration is desirable
* Experience within aerospace, advanced automotive, motorsport, defence, electrification or other high-reliability engineering environments is highly desirable
* Open to working on-site in Spain, with long-term presence expected
✛ Take your career to new HYTEs ✛
* Opportunity to lead the development of next-generation high-voltage battery technology
* High visibility and influence within a growing, technically driven engineering organisation
* Direct involvement in architecture, development, testing, certification and industrialisation activities
* Combination of technical leadership and hands-on engineering responsibility
* Clear opportunity to shape future battery engineering capability as the programme scales
