About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE, and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D; in computer and computational science under one roof, with over 1000 staff from 60 countries.
Context and Mission
The Earth Sciences Department, led by Prof. Francisco Doblas-Reyes, is highly active in air quality and atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction and climate services in Europe. The group contributes to forecasting activities such as MONARCH, the operational model of the WMO Regional Specialized Meteorological Center for Atmospheric Sand and Dust Forecast, and participates in the Copernicus Programme. It also develops and maintains CALIOPE, a high‑resolution air quality system for the Iberian Peninsula.
Key Duties
- Coordinate the technical deployment of operational system upgrades and ensure all requirements are met.
- Collaborate in planning and executing operational activities.
- Diagnose operational technical issues in the production chain, propose solutions, and implement measures with the team.
- Optimize IT resource usage and enhance reliability across multiple HPC systems.
- Interact with computational earth sciences scientists to improve system performance and reliability.
- Document, update and improve operational procedures.
- Contribute to the design of a long‑term roadmap, including transition to AI‑driven solutions.
Requirements
- Education
- Master's or PhD in computer science, engineering, or related discipline.
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience implementing operational or engineering projects with strong technical components.
- Proven experience using high‑performance computing platforms.
- Experience designing IT infrastructure use based on user requirements.
- Ability to develop strong relationships and steering skills.
- Experience with geophysical models, workflow systems, and scientific data.
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience with Linux systems and scripting languages.
- Experience implementing operational policies and procedures.
- Experience with operational environments or IT service monitoring.
- Fluency in English and Spanish, both spoken and written.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interact with diverse teams.
- Professional collaboration within a multidisciplinary research team.

Conditions
- Position located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.
- Full‑time contract (37.5 h/week) with adaptable working hours and an extensive training plan.
- Benefits include restaurant tickets, private health insurance, relocation support, and the possibility of long‑term contract.
- Holidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per collective agreement.
