Overview of the Position For close to 60 years, the Salt Spring Arts Council (SSAC) has fostered community vitality through the arts. We build the creative capacity of our community by offering a wide array of cultural programs and activities.

The Artcraft Gallery is open to the public from mid-June to September and features fine art and craft made in the Southern Gulf Islands by a diverse range of artists, with a particular goal of increasing representation of local Indigenous artists. As the longest-running and largest gallery of its kind in British Columbia, Artcraft welcomes approximately 12,000 visitors during the summer months. We operate at historic Mahon Hall in the heart of Ganges village, home to the arts council’s programs and offices.

The Gallery and Events Assistant will gain valuable experience as a key member of the Artcraft Gallery and shop team, while learning about the breadth of administration required to support not only a retail gallery but also a successful, multi-program community arts council. Working closely with the Artcraft Manager, the Assistant will also support four gallery-style exhibition \\\"showcases,\\\" each profiling an artist or group for one month, with accompanying public receptions and artist talks.

The Assistant will gain experience in the multi-faceted operations of Artcraft, including gallery set-up, liaising with and supporting artists, inventory intake and management, and retail and customer service. The Assistant will also support promotions and communications for summer programs, assist artists in building their online profiles in the SSAC Directory, represent SSAC at regular public events throughout the summer, and— along with all SSAC staff-lend a helping hand wherever needed.

Responsibilities
- Support annual Gallery set-up, inventory intake, artwork delivery and display
- Assist Artcraft Showcases with exhibit set up, signage and labels, and special events
- Edit and update the annual Artcraft Gallery artist binder
- Provide customer service and retail support in the Gallery as well as online
- Undertake various Gallery duties including opening and closing procedures, maintaining stock, data entry and communications with local artists and artisans
- Support special events including receptions and artist talks, as needed
- Work with the Artcraft Manager in preparing and collecting social media content
- Provide technical support for members to create and update Artist Listings, including photography when needed
- Provide a presence for SSA at public events
- Assist with all aspects of daily gallery and office duties such as answering phones, emails, filing, photocopying and supporting visitors, including related duties as needed
Qualifications
- Experience in a retail setting
- Ability to multitask

- Strong computer skills
- Strong time management skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Google Suite, spreadsheets and graphic or website software
- Experience with graphic design, photography, or videography
- A student studying arts (e.g. Art History, Arts Admin, Fine Arts or Studio Arts)
Additional Requirements
- Must be willing to undergo a Criminal Records Check
- Must be between the age of 16-30 at the start of employment
- Must have been a full-time student (high school, college, or university student) in the semester preceding and intending to return to full time studies
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends

Terms of Employment Rate of pay: $21/hr. - 35 hours per week (16 weeks), some evenings and weekends. Position starts May 11 and runs through August 29, 2026. For an eligible high school student, the position would start as part-time hours, and move to full-time in the summer months.
