Job Description Summary
This pivotal role involves the development of innovative power converters and power electronics-based equipment designs for HVDC transmission, DC grid architectures, and FACTS, ensuring optimal integration with the control and the broader power system. The successful candidate will report to the Valve Converter Electrical Team Leader, and collaborate with the power electronics valves product manager and world‑class experts within the HVDC converter valve team to deliver innovative converter valve products that positively impact the business.
The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within a globally recognized expert team in HVDC and FACTS. The candidate will play a major role in technical decisions and design and innovation phases. It also involves internal interactions with other HVDC engineering functions and other GE Vernova businesses, but also external interactions with HVDC customers, 3rd party companies such as test laboratories, standard committees, universities and so on. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the development of the future generation of HVDC converters and multiterminal HVDC applications. Responsibilities
* Design, model, analyze and validate power electronic topologies, converters and components for Voltage Source Converters (VSC), Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) for HVDC and FACTS applications.
* Validate performance of developed solutions through simulations, supporting prototyping, and testing.
* Lead and take ownership of the development of requirement specifications, design specifications and test specifications.
* Document technology and results through patent applications, technical reports, and publications.
* Contribute to and lead the development of new products and advanced technological solutions within the HVDC and FACTS market.
* Mentor and guide a team of engineers in achieving the business objectives.
* Support the control and the system design teams to develop optimal holistic solutions.
* Develop design and sizing tools.
* Ensure that solutions adopted are both technically appropriate and that GE Vernova has freedom to utilize these solutions.
* Ensure that work performed considers applicable international standards and policies.
* Transfer technology to engineering teams in GE Vernova to be included in next generation products and services.
* Stay current with advances in system technologies to seek out new ideas and applications.
* Work in an exciting international team environment with colleagues across GE Vernova and partners from industry, academia, and government agencies.
* Define, plan, and manage development activities independently.
* Participate in gate review meetings, design review meetings and quality processes.
* Ensure GE’s Health and Safety processes are adhered to by personnel.
Qualifications / Requirements
* Doctorate degree in an Engineering field with a minimum of 8 years of experience in design, development and validation of power converters, or master’s degree with a minimum of 15 years of experience.
* Minimum of 5 years’ experience in development of complex power converters of >1MVA for grid or industrial applications (e.g., HVDC converter, HVDC multiterminal scheme, wind/solar converter, STATCOM, multi‑level inverters, rectifiers, filters, drives, etc.).
* Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink and/or PLECS, Psim, LTSpice, PSCAD or equivalent modelling software for the converter and component simulation of VSC‑HVDC applications or complex multi‑level converters.
* Experience in commissioning projects and developing power electronic solutions for industrial and AC transmission grid applications.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
* Ability and willingness to travel 30% of the time, including internationally, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies.
Desired Skills
* Deep understanding of Voltage‑Sourced Converter (VSC) HVDC schemes; some knowledge of LCC (Line‑Commutated Converter) is advantageous.
* Wide design experience for electrical components inside converter valves including auxiliary circuits (gate drives, bypass switch, and protection elements).
* Deep knowledge of power electronics devices and converter topologies including voltage‑sourced and current‑source converters.
* Demonstrated experience of developing innovative solutions.
* Deep understanding of power semiconductor devices (IGBTs, thyristors, MV power modules, etc.), their control, testing, packaging, and thermal management.
* Extensive experience in designing VSC or LCC or complex multilevel converters.
* Experience designing, specifying and testing power electronic components such as capacitors, inductors, and filters.
* Experience developing control solutions for industrial and AC transmission grid applications in compliance with grid codes and regulations.
* Knowledge of EMI and ensuring converters are EMI‑robust/compliant.
* Experience with analogue and digital electronics in a power‑electronics environment (e.g., gate drivers).
* Strong background in control of power electronic systems.
* Experience sizing and designing power system solutions, and liaison with relevant departments.
* Understanding of power systems operation, stability, protection, etc.
* Strong simulation skills in Matlab‑Simulink, PSCAD‑EMTDC.
* Knowledge of plant and power network electrical systems and equipment.
* Knowledge of grid‑following and grid‑forming techniques.
* Experience interacting with customers and regulatory stakeholders.
* Strong communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership.
* Experience with program management, including schedules, milestones, funding tracking.
* Demonstrated ability to take an innovative idea from concept to product.
