About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of PRACE, and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into computer and computational science and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

Context and mission

The BSC Earth Sciences Department (ES) is looking for a software engineer to consolidate and further develop the existing software environment for the Global Health and Resilience Group’s portfolio of climate, health and digital technology projects. The software engineer will be a member of the Data and Diagnostics Team (DDT), which provides support and has developed a suite of R packages and dashboards used by scientists to perform their analysis and verify simulations over observations and reanalysis, from sub-seasonal to decadal time scales, from data loading to diagnostics computation and visualization.

The successful applicant will join the team to contribute to the development and computational optimization of R packages, dashboards and user interfaces linking climate and health data in decision-support models, in collaboration with the Global Health Resilience (GHR) group, led by ICREA Professor Rachel Lowe. The mission of the GHR group is to co-design policy-relevant methodological solutions to enhance surveillance, preparedness and response to climate-sensitive disease outbreaks. In collaboration with stakeholders and R tool users, the applicant will participate in projects with partners across the globe to develop and optimize R data and modelling analysis functions, packages and dashboards for user needs. These data, modelling and visualization tools will be developed within a High Performance Computing environment. The applicant will also contribute to the strategy for development of Earth Sciences Department tools to increase applicability, visibility and impact of research and services.
