At IONOS, Europe’s #1 hosting provider, we are looking for a seasoned leader to take full ownership of our Infrastructure Operations unit in Spain. This is not a role for someone looking to "try" management—it is for an established Engineering Manager who thrives on stabilizing complex systems, scaling teams, and executing high-stakes migrations.
The Mandate: Rebuild, Stabilize, and Scale
You are being brought in to solve a critical resource-capacity challenge. Your mission is to take over a massive, global infrastructure—500+ servers, 28 data centers, and multi-petabyte Ceph deployments—and rebuild the engineering culture and headcount from scratch.
As an experienced lead, you will have full autonomy to:
- Hiring Authority: Build your own team by recruiting 7 senior engineers and managing short-term freelance resources to de-risk the operation.
- Operational Strategy: Define the "how." You will establish the workflows, SLA adherence protocols, and on-call structures for the Stretch and Telekom platforms.
- Technical Stewardship: Maintain your edge by dedicating 40% of your time to high-level technical contribution, acting as the ultimate authority on Linux, Ceph, and OpenStack.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Reconstruction: Lead the end-to-end recruitment and onboarding strategy for the new unit in Spain.
- Migration Leadership: Own the operational readiness for the strategic Telekom platform migration.
- Stakeholder Management: Coordinate with senior leadership in Cologne (Germany) to ensure seamless institutional knowledge transfer and alignment with the Stretch Telekom Business Case.
- Risk Mitigation: Prevent operational collapse by balancing immediate firefighting with long-term infrastructure hardening.
Your Proven Track Record
We are looking for a peer—a leader who has already successfully managed infrastructure teams through periods of high pressure and growth.
- Proven Management Experience: 3-5+ years in a formal Engineering Manager or Head of Operations role, with a focus on people development and talent acquisition.
- Large-Scale Infrastructure Expertise: Deep technical roots (+5-8 years) in Linux environments, specifically with Ceph clusters and OpenStack at scale.
- Operational Excellence: Expert-level knowledge of automation (Ansible/Puppet/Terraform) and observability (Prometheus/Grafana).
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to map technical stability to business revenue benefits and SLA commitments.
