About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

Context And Mission
The participant will work in the wind energy application area of the Energy oriented Center of Excellence – energy towards exascale ( The core of the proposed work consist in further developing the spectral element in-house CFD code SOD2D ( so that it provides the wind community with a European code that can take full advantage of biggest European Supercomputers which use GPUs. The code is written in Fortran and uses OpenACC. Within the project there are activities on GPU code optimisation and use of linear algebra (algebraic multigrid) libraries that can provide correct algorithmic scalability on the biggest supercomputers. On the other hand, it is key to prove the wind energy community that the code is mature enough to satisfy their needs and that computationally efficient scale resolving (LES) can provide them with superior accuracy and understanding of wind farm flows. Ongoing project with Iberdrola and Oceanwinds will provide direct feedback on the industry needs.
Key Duties
* To develop wind farm CFD workflows and perform benchmarking activities that provide enhanced understanding of wind farm flow and highlight the unique capabilities of SOD2D.
* To develop and disseminate scale-resolving based on high order spectral elements.
* To participate in the rest of the CFD activities of the LS/CFD team in CASE.
Requirements
* Education
o Engineering, Physics or Mathematics background preferably with a MSc in computational fluid dynamics or similar
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Wind farm modelling or experience in CFD code optimisation.
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Experience in CFD for wind energy – wind resource assessment ( at least 1 year)
o Experience in large-scale simulation (wall models for LES, complex mesh generation, industrial simulations, etc. ) ( at least 1 year)
o Good programming level (python, C, Fortran, C++, etc.) ( at least 1 year)
o Expedience in GPU programming and optimisation (OpenACC, CUDA, OpenMP) ( at least 1 year)
o Experience with Algebraic Multigrid Libraries for sparse linear systems. ( at least 1 year).
o Experience in CFD development ( at least 1 year)
o Knowledge in large eddy simulation models ( at least 1 year)
o Understanding of HPC clusters at a user level and experience programming MPI ( at least 1 year).
o Good writing and oral skills (English is a must – Spanish preferable)
