The mission of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is to achieve the highest level of scientific and technological excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Its research lines focus on the physical and chemical properties that arise from matter's behaviour at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for three consecutive periods (2014-2018, 2018-2022, 2023-2026). The institute comprises 19 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering various areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Job Title : Postdoctoral Researcher in spectroelectrochemical investigations of methane conversion on tailored electrocatalysts
Research area or group : NanoElectrocatalysis and Sustainable Chemistry
Description of Group / Project : The NanoElectrocatalysis Group combines electrochemistry, materials science, and in situ characterisation at the atomic scale to elucidate design principles for discovering and developing novel electrocatalyst materials. These materials are aimed at the conversion and storage of renewable energy, as well as the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals. The successful candidate will characterise functional electrocatalyst materials and investigate the molecular mechanisms for the direct electrochemical activation and conversion of methane into methanol and other valuable chemicals.
Main Tasks and responsibilities :
The candidate will combine classical electrochemical methods with in situ characterisation techniques such as infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and synchrotron-based structural characterisation methods. This work aims to investigate the structure-property relations of electrocatalyst materials and the mechanisms of electrocatalytic oxidation reactions, focusing on converting methane into methanol. The candidate will develop electrochemical and in situ characterisation methods for real-time detection of intermediates and products. The research will involve collaboration with other ICN2 groups and international research institutions. The candidate will conduct independent research, publish scientific papers, and present findings at international conferences.
