Telefonica Innovación Digital - Discovery Research is a leading industrial research lab based in Spain. The aim of the lab is to carry out research studies on mid to long-term related to several technological areas of interest to the Telefónica Group. The research group follows an open research model in collaboration with universities and other research institutions, promoting dissemination of their work through publications and technology transfer. The group comprises a multidisciplinary team with skills in systems, networks, HCI, Machine Learning, and Privacy/Security.
For this position, we are seeking candidates at all levels of seniority for a staff researcher role to strengthen our efforts in Machine Learning (ML) and Systems, with a focus on (theoretical) Distributed or Federated ML, and their applications to (mobile) systems and networks. Knowledge or experience in privacy and security aspects related to these areas will be highly valued.
MISSION
The researcher will propose and develop research ideas individually and collaboratively with the team and Telefonica. They will also build strong collaborations with academic institutions, industry partners, customers, and government agencies. Responsibilities include disseminating research results via publications and demonstrations, generating intellectual property, and partnering with business units for research exploitation.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Propose and develop research that advances the state of the art.
2. Establish and lead collaborations with academia, industry, and government.
3. Pursue funding opportunities through proposal writing for grants at national, European, and international levels.
4. Disseminate research via publications and demonstrations at top venues worldwide.
5. Generate intellectual property.
6. Partner with business units to promote research outputs.
7. Supervise interns and collaborate with other researchers and Telefonica members.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Ph.D. in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Machine Learning, Systems & Networking, or related fields (or expected soon).
2. Strong research record with publications in top conferences and journals (e.g., NeurIPS, KDD, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, MLSys, EuroSys, MobiCom, MobiSys).
3. Excellent communication skills.
4. Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
5. Expertise in (distributed) ML, Split Learning, systems & networks for Large ML Models (LLMs), etc.
6. Experience in building systems and conducting experimental research (methodologies, software, testbeds, models).
