Amazon is looking for creative Applied Scientists to tackle some of the most interesting problems in Articial Intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), search and related areas with our Amazon Books team. If you are looking for an opportunity to solve deep technical problems and build innovative solutions in a fast-paced environment working within a smart and passionate team, this might be the role for you. You will develop and implement novel algorithms and modeling techniques to advance the state-of-the-art in technology areas at the intersection of AI, LLMs, NLP, search, and deep learning. You will innovate, help move the needle for research in these exciting areas and build state-of-the-art technologies that enable delightful experiences for hundreds of millions of people.
Key job responsibilities
* Work collaboratively with other scientists and developers to design and implement scalable and reliable pipelines for improving our customers' experience discovering and getting the most out of their books;
* Drive scalable solutions: from understanding the customer and business needs, to prototyping, production testing and through engineering directly to production;
* Drive best practices on the team, deal with ambiguity and competing objectives, and mentor and guide other members to achieve their career growth potential.
* Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and adopt the most appropriate long-term solution to a variety of use cases.
On a Typical Day You Will
* run experiments. Depending on the stage or project, this may involve designing the experiments, collecting data, training models, prompt/spec engineering/optimization, error analysis, online system analysis, etc.
* help drive decisions by interpreting and communicating experimental results with stakeholders (managers, subject matter experts, other scientists, and engineers) and seeking/listening to their feedback.
Additionally, you'll attend and contribute to regular meetings, activities and conferences with the wider science team, organization as well as internal and external communities.

Books Science, where state-of-the-art AI meets the world of books. We're here to catalyze engineering teams, fuel innovation, and transform the customer experience for readers, authors, and publishers. We:
* Take ownership of early-stage project work, including prototyping, analysis, and model development.
* Partner with different teams to help them learn about and adopt AI capabilities, be aware of AI limitations and adopt scientific best practices for long-term reusability and quality assurance.
* Our team combines broad AI knowledge with individual expertise in specific domains and Amazon Books areas.
Basic Qualifications
* PhD, or a Master's degree and experience in CS, CE, ML or related field
* Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
* Experience in building models for business application
* Experience in investigating, designing, prototyping, and delivering new and innovative system solutions
* Strong sense of ownership and drive
* Strong communication skills
* 1+ years of industry experience working in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
* PhD
* Have publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
* Experience in professional software development
* Experience building AI solutions for business applications in multiple areas such as: search, NLP, data quality, recommender systems.
* Experience with in one or more of: Generative AI, LLM-as-judge, prompt optimization, agentic workflows, LLM interpretability.
