Context And Mission
Supercomputers enable AI research and industrial innovation. This position is part of the Operations Department within the User Support team. The team will focus on supporting AI applications for key projects utilizing BSC resources, including performance optimization, code porting, specialized AI tutoring, and enhancing the scalability and performance of models.
BSC hosts MareNostrum 5 (MN5) within EUROHPC-JU, a pre-exascale system delivering 205 PFlops, with over 180 PFlops on NVIDIA H100 GPUs. MN5-AI is designed to accelerate AI research, supporting the MINERVA EuroHPC project, which provides training, education and technical assistance for integrating HPC resources into AI workflows and pre-training or customizing large-scale models.
The HPC User Support team helps researchers and companies optimize MN5 and MN5-AI usage for AI and HPC workloads.
Key Duties
* Optimize and adapt scientific application codes to new pre-exascale architectures and systems, focusing on AI applications and technologies.
* Improve the performance of existing AI environments, enhance serial efficiency and scalability, and assist with code modifications as needed.
* Choose and adapt algorithms and/or library routines for specific architectures (accelerators, new programming models, etc.).
* Provide consultancy to scientists on AI solutions to advance their research.
* Generate performance analyses and benchmarks for selected applications and report results to developers.
* Collaborate with other functional groups at European and international levels on technical matters related to AI scientific application support.
Requirements
* Education
o Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline with a focus on Artificial Intelligence at a technical level is required.
o Master's degree in a related field is desirable.
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Experience working with AI models and running them in parallel in HPC systems.
o Experience using performance analysis tools and parallel debuggers for GPUs.
o Experience supporting and collaborating with external partners.
o Good understanding of Linux environment and Shell scripting.
o Experience working with parallel programming codes (MPI and OpenMP) and batch systems like SLURM as a user.
o At least 2 years of experience in a similar position working with AI solutions.
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Experience in managing big and collaborative projects and experience with git and SVN.
o Experience porting codes to accelerators, specifically NVIDIA GPUs.
o Understanding of high-performance computing architectures.
o Experience porting and optimizing applications on UNIX-based systems; experience in Fortran, C, MPI, OpenMP, and parallel methods.
o Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
* Competences
o Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work within a team and complete tasks on schedule.
o Analytical problem-solving ability.
Conditions
* The position is located at BSC within the Operations Department.
* Full-time contract (37.5h/week) with a stimulating environment, flexible hours, extensive training, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and relocation support.
* Duration: Open-ended contract related to project and budget.
* Holidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per the collective agreement.

Development of the recruitment process
The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system (Concurso-Oposición). The process includes:
* Curriculum Analysis: evaluation of experience, degree, training and other relevant information. (40 points)
* Interview phase: technical competencies, knowledge, skills and personal competencies (60 points). A minimum of 30 points out of 60 is required to be eligible.
The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people with representation of women. A gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy. Interviews include technical and administrative rounds, plus a personality questionnaire and a technical exercise. Feedback will be provided to all interview participants.
