Vanderlande’s Technology Department is responsible for the design, specification, and commissioning of material handling systems for our customers. In this position, you will work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative customer-focused environment to determine and translate customer needs into simple and effective design solutions, provide accurate time estimates, produce manufacturing and assembly drawings, manage documentation, and create BOMs.
As a Senior Software Engineer (Embedded), you will work within projects to design, develop, integrate, and test high-quality (real-time) applications. You will develop efficient and effective solutions together with your team members. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team to realize scalable and flexible products that build the logistic systems of tomorrow. Where required, you will support your colleagues in the first pilots of new products. You will play a main role in developing software for our embedded microcontrollers.
These products will be used as building blocks by the Engineering department, who will subsequently integrate them into systems for our worldwide clients. Where necessary, you will support your colleagues in this integration process.
Essential Functions (Job Duties and Responsibilities):
1. Translate concepts into realized alternatives, focusing on own discipline, taking into account functionality, feasibility, quality, manufacturability, costs, and completion time.
2. Take into account other relevant disciplines. Make optimum use of team members’ expertise.
3. Responsible for maintaining VI Equipment Product lines, including supporting documentation.
4. Define a planning for the work to be done, estimate the workload and lead time, and communicate to relevant colleagues about changes and risks proactively. Adapt to changes and be solution-oriented.
5. Finalize a design and its deliverables, according to our processes, to guarantee a smooth transition to the relevant stakeholders.
6. Be a resource for coordinating technical details with VI Supply Chain.
7. Make improvements to existing equipment designs.
8. Support start-ups and other departments that require their support, ensuring safety and quality standards are met.
9. Deal with customers and suppliers to achieve the best solution.
10. Occasional travel to manufacturing facilities and project sites to evaluate processes and design improvements.
Required Education and Experience:
* Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology (e.g., Electronics, Mechatronics, or Software related).
* 7+ years’ experience in material handling or related industry.
* Experience with software design on Embedded platforms (C, C++) and optional Industrial PC (C#, C++).
* Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems.
* Experience with ARM Cortex M4 architecture.
* Knowledge of embedded controllers and industrial networks e.g., PROFINET, CIP Ethernet / IP, ASi-bus.
* Knowledge of field bus, I / O, sensors, actuators e.g., BLDC motors to large motor drives.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience designing complex automated systems with PLC / Embedded controlled systems, including safety designs, motor protection, and control, and Industrial Communication and networking (i.e., ASi-bus, Ethernet, TCP / IP, Profinet).
* Field engineering experience on site.
* Understanding of various hardware.
* Knowledge of product data / document lifecycle management software.
* Knowledge of controls engineering theories and principles.
* Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
* Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Self-motivated.
* Knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
* Knowledge of Agile processes and frameworks like SAFe.

Travel: This role requires up to 25% occasional travel and owning a car.
Supervisory Responsibility: None.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
The work environment may include exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, and loud noise. Physical demands include occasional lifting of up to 15 kg, talking, hearing, and sitting/standing at a computer for extended periods.
