Overview
PhD student in computational biophysics and machine learning (R1, FPI) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS). The role is part of the Evolutionary Systems Biophysics Group (ESBG) within the Life Sciences Department, focusing on the Knowledge Generation Project: MEGA-scale Frustration Analysis of the Protein Universe: Evolution, Dynamics, and SNV Impact (MEGAFrustratEDS).
Responsibilities
- Apply computational techniques to understand the biophysical properties of the native state of proteins and how they explore different conformational substates.
- Integrate this knowledge with evolutionary and clinical variant data to uncover the relationship between local energetic frustration and disease-causing SNVs.
- Contribute to building the Human Proteome-Wide Frustration Atlas and SNV classifier that will be made available to the community.
- Work in a highly sophisticated HPC environment and collaborate with international experts in structural bioinformatics and computational biophysics.
- Prepare and present scientific articles;
participate in project meetings and international collaborations.
Qualifications
- Education: MSc in bioinformatics, data science, computational biology, or machine learning–related areas. Undergraduate training in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, or other quantitative disciplines is preferred. Candidates with a biology background who have significant exposure to quantitative/computational science will also be considered.
- Essential knowledge: Previous experience in biophysics, machine learning, statistics, or physics;
strong programming skills (Python, R;
C++ is a plus);
high motivation and scientific curiosity.
- Additional knowledge: Familiarity with structural biology or life sciences research;
knowledge of AI/ML methodologies;
experience working withHPC environments;
fluency in written and spoken English.
- Competences: Good communication and presentation skills;
ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Conditions
- Location: BSC within the Life Sciences Department.
- Contract: Full-time (37.5 h/week);
4-year FPI fellowship including salary, PhD tuition fees, and funding for research stays abroad.
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st December per collective agreement.
