The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) is offering a full-time postdoctoral position based on-site at BC3 to provide cross-cutting research and coordination support across several climate action initiatives led by Dr. Estibaliz Sanz. The selected candidate will contribute to JUST4CARE (HORIZON-MISS-2024-CLIMA-01) – A Horizon Europe project that will be coordinated by BC3, which seeks to transform climate adaptation by embedding principles of justice, equity, and resilience into urban and regional planning. The project places special emphasis on addressing the needs of vulnerable and marginalized populations most affected by climate change across European cities and regions.
The selected candidate will play a key role in the scientific development and operational implementation of the project activities, working in close collaboration with the principal investigator and technical leads. Responsibilities will include supporting the coordination of research activities, contributing to data analysis and the production of academic outputs, assisting in the implementation of project tasks, liaising with partner institutions, and contributing to the preparation of technical reports for the European Commission and other funding bodies. This position offers the opportunity to be actively involved in both the strategic and scientific dimensions of cutting-edge climate action projects.
The level of dedication in different activities will vary throughout the contract period depending on the project needs and the established work schedule and will be managed by the internal project coordinator at BC3.
Job description:
The postdoctoral researcher will be participating in various activities throughout the project.
First, the researcher is expected to contribute to a comprehensive literature review that explores the intersections between climate adaptation, social justice, capacity building, governance, and co-creative methodologies.
Second, the researcher will support the scientific coordination of the projects, including the design of the scientific work plan and the preparation of scientific publications.
Third, the researcher will contribute to the design and implementation of various project tasks, advancing adaptation solutions, strengthening capacity building, enhancing local governance, and promoting social justice—particularly in the context of national and European case studies.
Fourth, the researcher will assist in the overall development and execution of project activities, working closely with the core team projects at BC3, project partners, and key stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of project outcomes.
International travel will be expected to project meetings and conferences.
Generally, the researcher will support the PI to achieve the scientific objectives of the project, develop effective task management and collaboratively work, publish and disseminate project findings. We seek highly motivated candidates to:

Key responsibilities:
Contribute to a comprehensive analysis of the intersection between adaptation to climate change, governance, resilience, social justices, urban and territorial challenges and co-creative methodologies.
Contribute to the design of the integrative co-creation methodology of the project and its adaptation to the projects needs
Lead on the design and implementation of a reflexive co-evaluation framework all along the project.
Main requirements/skills:
This is a predominantly social sciences project. It will be required a PhD level in social sciences.
Strong analytical skills, experience with qualitative and/or participatory research.
Scientific writing track record, experience drafting and publishing peer-reviewed articles or equivalent technical papers.
The applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as an excellent written and oral command of English and Spanish is required.
Academic experience in sustainability science—ideally addressing resilience, transformations to sustainability, or social justice in climate change related context.
Ability to work collaboratively, experience in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research.
