Offer Description
Agrotecnio is an international centre of excellence in agrifood research located in Lleida, Spain. Established in 2012, Agrotecnio promotes cutting-edge scientific research in the fields of plant and animal biotechnology, agri-food systems, and environmental sustainability. It plays a key role in addressing current and emerging challenges in the agri-food sector at both regional and global levels. The Soil and Water Improvement with Management research line at Agrotecnio (https://agrotecnio.org/ ) aims to promote soil health and sustainable agricultural transition through the adoption of biological-based technologies and practices which recarbonize soil and sustain plant nutrition. Dr. Evan A.N. Marks is the lead of soil chemistry and biology component of the research line, experienced in the evaluation of soil quality, with an emphasis on biological, chemical, and biochemical methods for evaluation of agricultural management practices influencing soil health.

Requirements
Research Field Agricultural sciences » Agronomics Education Level PhD or equivalent
Skills/Qualifications
You have a strong publication record relative to your career stage. Your expertise lies in agronomy or soil science, with laboratory experience and capacity, and you have a clear interest in developing and applying novel methodologies. You should also either have previous experience in or interest in applying modeling techniques. You are also comfortable using English in a professional and scientific context, including for manuscript preparation.
We are seeking candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship, European module, for a period of 24 months. Candidates must not have spent significant time in Spain in the previous 3 years, and maximum of 8 years experience in research. See call details at https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/postdoctoral-fellowships. These fellowship applications are prepared jointly by the applicant and host organization, and submitted by the applicant.
Specific Requirements
We are seeking a candidate to carry out a specific research project in the context of a competitively funded initiative, in collaboration with the Agronomy research team (a component of the Agrotecnio Applied Plant Biotechnology Group) led by Dr. Daniel Plaza-Bonilla (https://www.danielplazabonilla.eu/ ). The existing project, SUSMAIZE, aims to assess nitrogen pathways for more efficient and sustainable maize production by integrating fertigation with micro-filtered slurry and cover cropping strategies. The broader objective is to reduce reliance on mineral nitrogen inputs by aligning crop needs with nitrogen supplied through nature-based and circular economy approaches.
Your role will focus on exploring the dynamics of soil-mediated nutrient cycles that underpin plant nutrition in maize-based systems. The experiment is based on a comprehensive design that incorporates the use of various 15N traced cover crops, managed to understand how carbon and, in particular, nitrogen are cycled through the soil and taken up by plants. You will be responsible for investigating the dynamics of soil organic matter, ecophysiological responses of the soil system, and the movement of nitrogen through different pools, supported by the use of stable isotope techniques.
In addition, you will develop and apply innovative laboratory assays to analyze soil samples, using methods designed to improve the partitioning of carbon and nitrogen pools. This work will allow for a more detailed assessment of how management practices influence soil C and N dynamics and stabilization processes. This will be developed further in a modeling component of the project.
Interested candidates should contact Dr. Evan Marks by email ( evan.marks@agrotecnio.udl.cat ) including a CV and brief cover letter. Please be sure to verify your eligibility for the MSCA-PF program beforehand.
