Offer Description

The PhD researcher will work on the project “Contextualized Multi-Intervention Strategies to Break the Vicious Cycle of Intimate Partner Violence (BREAKINGTHECYCLE)”, led by Prof. Jorge Rodríguez Menés and Dr. Martí Rovira. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most prevalent form of violence against women and is characterized by high levels of recidivism, underscoring the limited effectiveness of existing criminal justice responses. This project evaluates the impact of penal and rehabilitative interventions on desistance from IPV, conceptualizing reintegration as a multidimensional process that extends beyond criminal outcomes to include employment and health trajectories. Leveraging a unique longitudinal dataset that links criminal, health, and employment records for offenders, victims, and control groups in Catalonia, the project applies advanced causal inference methods to address selection bias and identify effective intervention strategies.

Job description and tasks

The Sociodemography Research Group invites applications from outstanding PhD graduates with a strong research interest in violence against women. We offer one full time postdoctoral position within the project “Contextualized Multi-Intervention Strategies to Break the Vicious Cycle of Intimate Partner Violence (BREAKING-THE-CYCLE)”, led by Prof. Jorge Rodríguez Menés and Dr. Martí Rovira and funded by the Spanish Research Agency (PID2024-160426OB-I00).

The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate closely with the PIs and the project team on the preparation, cleaning, and validation of a large longitudinal dataset. The dataset is constructed by linking criminal justice, health, and employment administrative records across the life course for a full cohort of individuals convicted of an intimate partner violence (IPV) offense in Catalonia, Spain, during a five-year period, as well as their victims. Comparative samples include individuals convicted of other types of crimes and members of the general population observed over the same period. Substantial research support is required due to the size and complexity of the data, the challenges of linking multiple anonymized administrative sources, and the demands of preparing analytic files for longitudinal and causal analyses.

The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute to empirical analyses of offenders’ and victims’ profiles, as well as to evaluations of criminal justice interventions aimed at reducing IPV. The position involves active participation in producing project outputs, including reports and peer-reviewed publications, and in disseminating research findings to academic and policy audiences.

Candidates must have strong quantitative skills and demonstrated experience with longitudinal data analysis, as well as advanced proficiency in Stata (preferably) and/or R. The position is full-time (35 hours per week) for a duration until the specific tasks are completed scheduled for April 2028 and will be supervised by the project’s principal investigators.

The postdoc will be based in the Sociodemography Research Group, Department of Political and Social Sciences, Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona). The anticipated start date is September 1, 2026, and the position will run through April, 2028.

* A PhD in sociology, criminology, demography, human geography, economics, or another relevant social science.
* Excellent quantitative research skills and proven experience in managing (merging, aggregating, adding, etc.) large longitudinal datasets and in multivariate statistical analyses (linear and logistic regression; multilevel models; event history analyses; principal component analysis, etc.).
* Good writing skills and fluency in written and spoken English, and experience in academic writing.
* A keen interest in undertaking research on violence against women and life-course dynamics.

A great curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific research.
