Overview Data Factory Source Manager role at Boehringer Ingelheim. The Data Source Manager serves as a critical bridge between business domains and technical data teams, combining deep business knowledge with data management expertise. This hybrid role is responsible for defining and governing how data enters the organization's data ecosystem through strategic data contract management and source requirement coordination. They act as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure data ingestion aligns with business needs while maintaining quality, compliance, and sustainability standards.
Responsibilities
Data Strategy & Requirements Management:
Define and prioritize data source requirements based on business needs and strategic objectives
Identify critical data elements required to support business use cases, analytics, and decision-making
Develop and maintain a strategic roadmap for data source onboarding and evolution
Assess the value and feasibility of new data sources against business priorities
Data Contract Management & Compliance:
Design, document, and version data contracts, aligning with source system owners, providers, and business stakeholders
Manage data contract changes throughout their lifecycle to support current and future business needs
Ensure all data ingestion activities comply with regulatory requirements, data privacy laws, and organizational policies
Collaborate with legal, privacy, and security teams to maintain compliant data sourcing practices
Change Impact Assessment & Mitigation:
Assess and document impacts of source system changes (e.g., schema modifications, technology upgrades, process changes)
Evaluate whether changes require updates to data contracts, ingestion processes, or downstream systems
Identify and communicate impacts to data consumers, developers, and dependent systems
Develop mitigation strategies to minimize disruption to data availability and quality
Cross-functional Coordination & Stakeholder Management:
Coordinate activities across business units, data engineering, IT, and vendor teams
Facilitate communication between technical teams and business domain experts
Translate business requirements into technical specifications and vice versa
Manage relationships with external data providers and internal source system owners
Proactively notify data consumers of upcoming source changes and their implications
Manage stakeholder expectations during source system transitions and changes
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Information Systems, Data Management, Computer Science, or a related field
5-7 years of experience in data management, business analysis, or related roles
3+ years of experience working at the intersection of business and technology teams
Strong stakeholder management and coordination skills across technical teams, business units, and vendor organizations
Proven negotiation skills and ability to influence without direct authority
Highly organized with strong project coordination abilities and attention to detail
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address complex challenges and ensure data accuracy
Excellent communication skills to engage both technical and non-technical audiences effectively
Business Domain Expertise:
Deep understanding of business processes, workflows, data flows, and critical business data requirements across multiple functional areas (e.g., finance, operations, sales, marketing, supply chain)
Ability to translate complex business needs into clear, actionable data requirements and technical specifications
Data Management and Integration:
Proven experience managing data sourcing strategies, integration projects, and assessing impacts of source system changes on data pipelines and downstream consumers
Expertise in diverse data ingestion patterns (batch, real-time, APIs, file transfers) and source system architectures
Familiarity with data platforms and tools, including cloud data warehouses, ETL/ELT tools, and data catalogs
Data Contract and Lifecycle Management:
Demonstrated experience in designing, negotiating, and managing data contracts with internal and external data providers
Strong understanding of data architecture concepts, data modeling, and database technologies
Technical Proficiency:
Basic proficiency in SQL for data analysis, validation, and troubleshooting
Familiarity with version control and documentation tools to ensure traceability and collaboration
